The History of 'Saree'
-
Ancient Beginnings (Indus Valley Civilization, 2800–1800 BCE)
The origins of the saree can be traced back to the Indus Valley Civilization, where sculptures depict women draped in unstitched garments. Worn as a symbol of simplicity and grace, the saree has evolved over millennia while preserving its essence.
-
Influence of Dynasties & Empires
During the Mauryan and Gupta periods, sarees were adorned with gold borders and woven from fine fabrics, signifying status and beauty. The Mughal era introduced luxurious silks, intricate embroidery, and zari work, blending Persian artistry with Indian tradition to create timeless designs.
-
The Rise of Regional Weaves
As India’s textile heritage flourished, different regions developed their own distinctive weaves. The North became known for Banarasi silk, the South for Kanjeevaram sarees, and Central India for the delicate Chanderi fabric. Each region also introduced unique draping styles, colors, and motifs that reflected its culture and craftsmanship.
-
Colonial Era & Evolution
During British rule, industrialization brought machine-made fabrics, but India’s rich handloom tradition endured. The saree also became a powerful symbol of nationalism during the independence movement, worn by leaders like Mahatma Gandhi’s followers to promote indigenous textiles.
-
Modern Revival & Global Influence
Today, the saree continues to thrive, blending tradition with contemporary fashion. Designers reinterpret classic weaves to suit modern aesthetics, and the saree remains an enduring symbol of elegance, embraced by women across generations and admired worldwide.
